Haiti Disaster Response
The terrible earthquake in Haiti has focused the attention of the
entire world on a country and people who have experienced more than
their share of poverty, tragedy and instability.
As Miss Canada International, I am proud of how Canada has responded
so quickly to this terrible event. I want to wish good luck to all
those Canadian military personnel, medical professionals and aid
workers now en route to Haiti to provide relief, and to help rebuild
homes and lives.
A number of selfless individuals and families from my home town of
Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, are in Haiti performing missionary work and
working with orphans. Thankfully, they survived the earthquake, but
their work has now become even more urgent and vital. Their desire
to help those in desperate need, even in the face of hardship and
grave danger, is inspirational. Good luck to you all.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who are now desperately
searching for lost friends and family. I especially want to add my
prayers to those for the many Canadians who are among the missing.
As we helplessly watch the television reports and read the web
posts, it is apparent we will not fully understand the extent of the
death and damage in Haiti for some time.
Thank you to everyone across Canada who have already pledged support
for the relief effort and those who plan to make a donation.
