Miss Canada International 2010

Helping to create a healthy community is something I was raised to believe in.

I am proud to be a part of my family's tradition of being actively involved in my community and working to promote health, wellness and physical activity. From a young age, I worked at my grandfather's drug store on Main Street along with my mother, sister, aunts uncles and cousins. Here I learned the value of hard work in a small, downtown family business. More importantly, working in a drug store gave me a chance to see how a healthy, active lifestyle can play a major role in preventing illness and allow us all to enjoy an improved quality of life.

This is why I am eager to pursue a career as a registered Massage Therapist following the completion of my degree at the Canadian Collage of Massage and Hydrotherapy.

Prior to enrolling in Collage, I thoroughly enjoyed being actively involved in student life at Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School. Coming from a family with a history of involvement in politics and public affairs, it was natural for me to become engaged in student politics and I served on YCMHS Student Council from 2004 to 2007. I was also a member of the 2005 Winter Carnival Committee and the YCMHS Spirit Committee.

While a student at the Maple Grove Education Centre, I was the recipient of the Lesley-Anne Doucet Friendship Award in 2004.                                         Bridget Nickerson

Along with working at City Drug Store, I have been lucky to be able to explore myinterests in creating a healthy community through my employment at the Yarmouth YMCA. My job at the "Y" began in 2005 and I continue to work there while on summer break from university.

Being involved with the YMCA has also opened up new opportunities for me to get involved in my community through volunteering. It has been my pleasure to help out at the annual YMCA Travel & Leisure Auction, as well as the YMCA Triathlon and Duathlon events, and with the Y-12 Lottery, the primary annual fundraising campaign for the Y. I have also done fundraising activities for Multiple Sclerosis.

The concept of "giving something back" has taken on a new meaning for me since I decided to become a bone marrow donor. Being a regular blood donor since the age of 16, I was recently contacted by Canadian Blood Services and asked to consider donating bone marrow.

My decision was a simple, but difficult one. I understand marrow extraction can be a painful procedure involving several weeks of recuperation. However, it's hard to turn down the opportunity to perhaps save the life of someone struggling with a terrible disease. My first experience in a pageant was in our local Seafest pageant 2008, followed by the Miss Nova Scotia International 2009 pageant. Taking part in the Miss Canada International Pageant is a wonderful opportunity. I have always enjoyed the spirit of a pageant and I am thrilled to be a part of this signature event.

For several years, a highlight of my summer has been my role as part of the City Drug Store float building team for the Seafest Parade. Designing and building a parade float takes creativity, patience, a healthy sense of humour and plenty of hard work. Our team has been honoured to win several awards for our parade floats over the years. Parade day is a chance to not only promote our float sponsor City Drug Store, but also to enliven community spirit during our major summer festival, and engage in a little friendly creative competition with other local businesses.

As a Miss Canada International 2010 I hope to gain an even deeper appreciation for my national community, and perhaps even learn a few things about myself.
